Historical Archaeology Directed as Principal Investigator
- Fort Colvile of the Hudson's Bay Company.
- The Spalding American Board Mission and the first Nez Perce
Indian Agency.
- The HBC Kanaka village and the overlying army component.
- Fort Lapwai quartermaster stables and blacksmith shop.
- Fort Spokane, Washington.
- St. Paul's Jesuit Mission, Kettle Falls.
- The City of Rocks stage station.
- Surveys of segments of overland emigrant trails: Oregon Trail
(South Snake variant and the Goodale Cutoff); The Applegate/California
Trail through City of Rocks; the Salt Lake Alternate to the California
Trail. As with all trails and roads we look for and describe
associated features and characteristics rather than just the line of
travel.
- Location of segments of Native American trails: the Nez Perce
southern trail to the Plains; parts of the Nez Perce War Trail of 1877
including the Lolo Trail; the Kalispel Silvis and a related Vision
Quest trail in the Selkirks. Work on trails and roads is usually
confined to the observation and recording of visible surface features,
not excavation.
- The location and markings of livestock drive trails.
- Wagon roads such as the Thunder Road to mines in central Idaho;
the Chico Road to the Owyhee and other mining districts in Idaho and
Montana; the Kettle Falls bateau and foot portages.
- The location of battlefields with the aim of eventual mapping and
other studies: as with Infernal Caverns, Watson's Springs, Tear Ass
Plain, Inskip's Ranch, Camp C.F. Smith, Three Forks Owyhee, and Abert
Rim.
- An inventory of Nez Perce allotment homesteads.
